FREELANCE / AGENCY BUSINESS

How to start a freelance / agency business

Doing freelance work and running an agency is hard work and it can take years to finally “get it”. I have made mistakes in the past that costed me a lot of money. In the last 10 years that I have been operating a digital agency, here are my tips.

Step 1

Learn a digital skill

After establishing my (semi-automated) online business, I wanted to try something new so I started freelance as a digital consultant to some businesses. I helped businesses promote their products and services online. Back in the day, very few companies are going online.

Here are the digital skills that you can easily learn:

  • Digital Marketing
  • Website Development
  • Social Media Marketing
  • SEO
  • Graphic Design
  • And many more!!!

Step 2

Establish your rates, create processes and systems

If you are a solo freelancer, establish your rates based on your financial goals and find the clients who you think can afford the rates you have. You need to create your USP (Unique Selling Point) on why they would choose you. I highly advise to only take what you can handle.

Agency Operations

This is very important when you establish your rates. Are you working alone? Are you starting an agency startup? Do you have an Accountant to handle your taxes and finance? And many more…

For agencies, it is important to have another partner or two who can help you scale the company. Maybe you have some friends who have a different skill than yours.

One of the things that exhausted me as an Agency Owner is scaling the operations. We hired people, but sometimes, scaling an agency can also be tiring as you need to have processes and systems for employees. We did it for almost 4.5 years. I worked with Coaches, Mentors, and Advisors to scale the company.

Step 3

Develop your brand

I started with Manila Internet Marketing. I could say it’s one of the first few digital marketing agencies 10 years ago. After 4 years, I then renamed it to NetRev Marketing which NetRev stands for interNET REVolution and NET REVenue.

Whether it’s a personal brand or an agency brand, don’t forget to have a catchy brand name and logo. Develop a brand strategy and create your target audience.

Step 4

Create your website for professional online presence

When I decided to start an agency, the first thing I did was to create a website for my company. Having your own professional website is very important. If you are a web design agency, your potential clients will judge you based on the website they are seeing. If you are a digital marketing agency, your online presence should be strong as what your brand says.

Step 5

Reach out to clients

This is one of the most challenging part of running a digital agency. In my experience, we had enough leads coming in but we still do lead generation. LinkedIn is a great platform to connect with potential clients. There are freelance platforms like Upwork and Freelancer, but I personally never really used them. I really started with having my own website, created a company profile and presentation deck, and have business cards. For clients outside the Philippines, they can find us with our SEO strategy and also LinkedIn.
